At this point in the MLB playoff odds race, the biggest swing came from Tampa Bay’s 8-4 win over Oakland. The Rays remain a lock at 100.0% with a 74-46 record, and the loss leaves ATH at 0.0% and 47-74, with no path back into the race.

Wednesday’s results, one by one

Tampa Bay Rays beat ATH 8-4, and the gap between a contender and a finished team was obvious. Tampa Bay’s 97 projected wins and 12.3% championship chance keep them in the top tier, while Oakland’s 65 projected wins confirm the season is over for good.

Houston Astros edged San Francisco Giants 2-1, a result that matters far more for Houston (68.1%, 62-60) than for SF, which is already at 0.0% with a 50-71 record. Houston’s 83 projected wins still leave them behind the league’s elite, but this kind of win keeps them in the thick of the chase.

St. Louis Cardinals stunned Philadelphia Phillies 7-1, and the score says as much as the odds do. STL is still only 19.8% to reach the postseason at 61-60, but PHI’s 44.0% and 64-58 mark took a hit in a matchup they needed to control.

Colorado Rockies knocked off Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4, another result that mattered more in the standings than in the race board. COL is at 0.0% and 48-73, while ARI sits outside this data set’s playoff field despite a 64-58 record.

San Diego Padres beat Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in the tightest game of the night. San Diego improved to 62.5% and 65-57, while Milwaukee’s 100.0% playoff odds and 74-47 record barely budged, though the loss trimmed a little margin off a 15.4% championship case.

Toronto Blue Jays beat Boston Red Sox 6-4, a useful road result for a Toronto club still hanging on at 16.8% and 59-63. Boston remains in strong position at 91.5% and 64-56, but the Red Sox have less room for these kinds of losses as the stretch run tightens.

Minnesota Twins topped Baltimore Orioles 7-5, a matchup between two teams trying to stay relevant without much breathing room. Minnesota moved to 26.5% at 60-62, while Baltimore slipped to 7.9% and 58-63, still alive but with little margin left.

Cleveland Guardians beat Detroit Tigers 6-4, and the playoff picture shows why that mattered. Cleveland sits at 29.6% with a 59-62 record, while Detroit is closer at 42.3% and 59-61, so every head-to-head result in this band of the standings carries extra weight.

What’s next

The next few days are about direct hits in the wild-card chase. Houston, San Diego, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Cleveland, Minnesota, Toronto, and Baltimore all still have meaningful odds, and every game now plays like a tiebreaker in the simulation.

Milwaukee and Tampa Bay are already essentially playing for seeding and October positioning, not survival. At the other end, ATH, SF, and COL are done in the model, which turns the focus entirely to how much damage they can still do to contenders.
