Why This Page Exists

Fans still search for “538 playoff odds” every day. FiveThirtyEight’s NHL, NBA, and MLB playoff probability models were the go-to for anyone who wanted a serious answer to how likely is my team to make it? When 538 shut down, that answer disappeared.

Clinch is built on the same core method — large-sample Monte Carlo simulation with real team strength ratings and full tiebreaker rules — and adds the two things 538’s static page couldn’t: live updates after every game, and rooting guidance for what to watch next.

What Clinch Kept from the 538 Approach

  • Full-season Monte Carlo — play out every remaining game 30,000 times, count how often each team makes the playoffs. Same category of method 538 used.
  • Real tiebreaker rules — playoff spots are awarded exactly as the leagues award them, including head-to-head, regulation wins, and division-specific rules.
  • Blended strength ratings — win percentage, goal/point differential, and Pythagorean expectancy form the foundation, with league-specific advanced metrics layered in.
  • Honest uncertainty — a 60% team is genuinely uncertain. The number reflects it.

What Clinch Added

  • Live refresh — a full 30,000-simulation run is triggered within minutes of every completed game. 538 refreshed daily; Clinch refreshes on every final.
  • Game impact scores — every game shows the exact playoff-odds swing your team experienced from that result.
  • Nightly rooting guide — on any given night, which other games matter most for your team’s playoff race. Which rivals do you want to lose. Which swing games shift the picture.
  • Push alerts — when your team’s odds move by more than a threshold, or when a division rival’s result changes the race, you get a notification.
  • Adaptive regression per team — teams whose actual results closely match their underlying metrics are trusted more; teams with large gaps get regressed toward their underlying quality. Blends shift as the season progresses.
  • Sport-specific advanced stats — MoneyPuck expected goals for NHL, Baseball Savant Statcast (xwOBA, barrel rate) for MLB.

FAQ

Is Clinch really a replacement for 538’s playoff odds? Yes for NHL, NBA, and MLB. Same category of simulation method, refreshed more often, with the added rooting guide and push alerts 538’s static page never had.

What about NFL? Not yet. Clinch is focused on NHL, NBA, and MLB for now.

How accurate are the odds? Teams with 90%+ odds almost always make the playoffs; teams under 5% almost never do. Mid-race uncertainty (30–70%) is where the model earns its keep — the percentage reflects genuine uncertainty about how the remaining schedule will play out.
