With 18 games left in the MLB season, the gap between comfort and danger is still moving. Milwaukee and Los Angeles have turned the stretch run into separation; Houston is running out of margin; Arizona and San Diego are hanging in the middle with almost identical odds and nearly identical pressure.

MLB: The top tier is set, but the middle is still shaking

MLB playoff odds show Milwaukee Brewers sitting on top at 90–100% after going 88-56, with a projected 98 wins and a 10–20% championship chance. Los Angeles Dodgers are right there at 90–100% too, 86-57 with 97 projected wins and a 10–20% title chance. Those are not fragile positions; they are the profile of teams that can spend September planning for October.

Atlanta Braves have also held serve at 90–100%, with an 85-58 record, 95 projected wins, and a 10–20% championship shot. Tampa Bay Rays are close behind at 90–100% and 85-58, though their 10–20% title chance trails the two Los Angeles and Milwaukee powers.

Rising: New York and Chicago are still positioned to finish the job

New York Yankees are the cleanest mover among the contenders: 81-62, 90–100% playoff odds, and a 92-win projection. They are not the flashiest team on the board, but they have already turned the race into a formality.

Chicago Cubs sit at 81-63 with 90–100% playoff odds and a 91-win projection. That is the profile of a team that has banked enough wins to survive a bad week.

Falling: Houston is still in, but the cushion is gone

Boston Red Sox are safe at 79-65 and 90–100%, but the real drop-off begins with Houston Astros. At 73-71, Houston’s playoff odds are down to 70–80%, with only 82 projected wins and a 0–10% championship chance. That is not a contender’s runway; it is a team trying to hold off the field.

Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres are the week’s most volatile pair. Arizona is 76-68 with a 40–50% playoff chance, while San Diego is 75-68 at 40–50%; both are projected for 85 wins, which tells you how narrow the margin is. One good week changes the bracket, one bad week ends the conversation.

One team to watch next week

Houston Astros are the swing team. At 73-71 and 70–80%, they are close enough to stay alive and far enough from safety that every loss cuts harder than the last.
