The cleanest swing on Monday came in Toronto, where the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 and kept a thin playoff thread alive at 6.4%. Boston still sits at 94.8%, but a one-run loss in late August is the kind of result that can shave margin off a team that has already penciled in October.

Monday’s scorelines

The day’s biggest statement was San Diego Padres 3, Milwaukee Brewers 2. Milwaukee is still a 100.0% playoff team with 98 projected wins and an 18.1% title shot, so the loss barely dents the bracket math, but it did show how little room even elite teams have in a stretch run. San Diego, at 47.6% and 63-57, keeps pressing from the middle of the pack with every tight win.

Arizona Diamondbacks hammered the Colorado Rockies 9-0, the day’s most lopsided result. Arizona’s 64-56 record already puts it in the race, and a shutout like that is the kind of clean win that helps separate a real contender from a fragile one; Colorado remains stuck at 0.0% and 46-73.

The Houston Astros handled the San Francisco Giants 6-3. Houston is up to 63.5% playoff odds at 61-59, and this was the sort of result that keeps the projection pointed upward rather than sideways. San Francisco stayed at 0.0% despite the loss because the math was already out of reach at 49-70.

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Athletics 10-6, another game that matched the standings gap. Tampa Bay remains locked in at 100.0% with 95 projected wins and an 11.4% championship chance, while the Athletics are 0.0% at 47-72. That kind of offensive outburst is exactly what a front-running team can afford to have in August.

Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Kansas City Royals 6-5, and the one-run finish matters more for the context than the standings. The Dodgers are already at 100.0% playoff odds with a 15.8% championship path, while Kansas City remains at 0.0% and 49-71. Close games are the late-season test for teams already headed to October.

The Philadelphia Phillies outlasted the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5, a better result for Philadelphia’s chase than for St. Louis’s survival bid. Philadelphia is 57.8% to make the postseason at 64-56, while St. Louis sits at 9.1% with a 59-60 record. The Cardinals needed a clean win, not another one-run setback.

Finally, the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 8-5. New York is still a long shot at 0.1% and 53-67, but Atlanta’s 98.9% playoff odds and 71-48 record mean the bigger effect was trimming a contender’s cushion rather than changing the race. Even at that level, losses like this are reminders that seeding still moves.

What’s next

The most important follow-up games are the ones involving the teams still fighting for position: San Diego, Houston, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Toronto, and Boston. San Diego’s 47.6% profile still leaves room to climb, Houston’s 63.5% gives it a firmer hold, and Toronto’s 6.4% means it needs a real run, not just isolated wins.

Atlanta and Milwaukee can absorb a loss, but both are still worth watching because the projection models already have them near the top of the bracket. The clubs at the bottom — New York, Kansas City, San Francisco, Colorado, and Oakland — are no longer playing for odds movement so much as spoiler value.
