Friday’s biggest swing came in San Diego, where the San Diego Padres (74-67, 50–60%) beat the New York Yankees (80-61, 90–100%) 3-2. It was the kind of game that trims very little off New York’s near-lock status, but it keeps San Diego in striking range with 18 games left and every win carrying real weight.

Friday’s Games, Sorted by Impact

The Cleveland Guardians (72-70, 40–50%) edged the Detroit Tigers (64-77, 0–10%) 7-6, a result that matters far more for Cleveland than the standings suggest. At 40–50%, the Guardians are still below even money, but a one-run escape over a fading Detroit club keeps them attached to the last playoff fight.

Boston Red Sox (77-65, 90–100%) beat the Baltimore Orioles (69-73, 0–10%) 1-0 in the tightest pitching game of the night. Boston got the type of win that playoff teams expect in September, while Baltimore’s slim 0–10% shot takes another hit because one-run losses are the wrong currency this late.

The Atlanta Braves (84-57, 90–100%) knocked off the Philadelphia Phillies (79-62, 90–100%) 5-2 in a matchup between two teams already comfortably in the bracket. Atlanta’s 90–100% playoff odds barely move, but the result reinforces the gap: the Braves remain one of the National League’s top championship threats at 10–20%, while Philadelphia sits at 0–10% despite its strong record.

Tampa Bay Rays (84-57, 90–100%) outlasted the Texas Rangers (70-72, 20–30%) 7-6, and that finish hit both sides differently. Tampa Bay keeps its grip on a near-certain playoff spot and 10–20% championship odds, while Texas drops another close one and stays stuck near the edge of the race.

The St. Louis Cardinals (71-71, 0–10%) survived the Colorado Rockies (54-87, 0–10%) 7-6. St. Louis needs almost every coin-flip to go its way to climb back into the picture, and this one kept the Cardinals alive without changing the larger math much.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (70-72, 0–10%) beat the Los Angeles Angels (53-88, 0–10%) 1-0. Pittsburgh can’t afford many missteps from here, but a shutout win is the cleanest kind of survival baseball for a team with only a small path left.

Athletics (56-86, 0–10%) edged the Seattle Mariners (66-76, 0–10%) 7-6. Seattle is still technically alive, but a one-run loss to a club already eliminated leaves little room for error, while the A’s simply played spoiler.

What the Numbers Say Now

The late-season picture is unchanged at the top: Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and New York are all effectively in, with 95, 95, and 92 projected wins. Philadelphia and Boston are also in strong position at 90 and 88 projected wins, but both still need to keep stacking results to protect their seeding.

Below that line, the race is narrower and harsher. San Diego’s 50–60% playoff chance and Cleveland’s 40–50% make every one-run game feel like a postseason test, while Texas at 20–30% and Seattle at 0–10% are running out of time to turn close losses into a real climb.

What’s Next

The next spotlight falls on the clubs still fighting for ground: San Diego, Cleveland, Texas, Seattle, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis. For the contenders, the task is simple — win the series and avoid handing away another 7-6 game.

At the top, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and New York are all playing for seeding now, not survival. The margin is much thinner for the teams outside the comfort zone, and Friday’s scores showed exactly how fast that margin can disappear.
