Houston’s 7-0 win over Seattle was the most consequential result for the bracket. The Houston Astros (78-79, ) are still on the bubble, but a shutout at this stage is the kind of result that keeps the path open; Seattle (73-84, ) is done.
The rest of the board was busy, with the Phillies beating Milwaukee 6-4, the Mets taking down Texas 6-3, Boston losing 3-2 to Cleveland, Pittsburgh blanking St. Louis 2-0, Miami thumping Chicago 8-2, and the Athletics losing 9-7 to the Angels.
What each game did to the race
Philadelphia Phillies (87-70, ) stayed nearly locked in by beating Milwaukee. The Brewers (98-59, ) already have the top-tier position in hand, so the 6-4 loss is more about timing than damage.
New York Mets (72-85, ) improved to 74 projected wins with the 6-3 upset over Texas, but they remain out of the race. Texas (78-79, ) took the hit that stings: every loss now chips away at a narrow playoff lane.
Boston Red Sox (84-73, ) lost a one-run game to Cleveland, but the numbers still keep them near-lock territory. The Cleveland Guardians (82-75, ) got the better of a direct competitor in a 3-2 game, and that kind of result matters more than the final margin suggests.
