In a race this deep into August, small changes in record still swing the board. The MLB playoff odds model is treating the top end as stable, but the gap between locked-in contenders and the fringe keeps moving fast.
MLB: Milwaukee Sets the Pace, Texas and Cleveland Slip Back
The biggest riser is Milwaukee Brewers, who are 81-50 with a 100.0% playoff chance and a 17.3% title shot. That combination of record and projection gives them the cleanest path in the league right now, even with Los Angeles Dodgers right behind at 80-51 and 99.9% to reach October.
Tampa Bay Rays have also held their ground at 78-53, with a 99.1% playoff probability and a 9.7% championship chance. Chicago Cubs are in a similar position at 76-56, and their 99.9% playoff number shows how firmly they’ve separated from the field.
The fallers are the teams hovering on the bubble. Texas Rangers are 66-66 with a 49.3% playoff probability, which is what a .500 club looks like in a race this tight. Cleveland Guardians are also stuck at 66-66, but their 46.8% odds make them the clearest example of a contender sliding toward the middle.
September Starts Early for Philadelphia and Chicago
Philadelphia Phillies are the most interesting mover among the near-locks. At 73-59, they sit at 84.7% to make the field, which is solid but far from safe compared with the teams above them.
Chicago White Sox have improved into relevance at 68-63, with a 78.5% playoff probability and a 4.8% championship path. That’s not a true contender profile, but it is a meaningful rise for a club that still has work to do.
On the other side, San Diego Padres are 71-61 with a 68.3% playoff chance and only a 2.2% championship probability. The record is still good, but the model is treating them more like a team fighting to stay above the cut than one climbing toward a top seed.
One Team to Watch Next Week
Boston Red Sox are the swing team. At 72-59 with a 98.0% playoff chance and a 6.9% championship shot, they sit close enough to the top group to move up quickly, but one rough week could pull them back into the traffic below.
