The biggest swing came in Milwaukee, where the Milwaukee Brewers handled the New York Mets 8-1 and kept their grip on the league’s top tier. Milwaukee sits at 82-51 with a 90–100% playoff chance and 10–20% title odds, while New York is already out of the race at 60-73.

Wednesday’s results, from the top down

The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 behind a clean shutout, and the contrast in their odds says it all: Tampa Bay is 79-54 with a 90–100% playoff chance, while Detroit is 62-71 and down to 0–10%. The Rays are still tracking as a near-lock; the Tigers needed offense and got none.

The New York Yankees were just as efficient, rolling past the Houston Astros 9-3. New York is 75-57 and sitting at 90–100% to make the postseason, while Houston fell to 66-67 and 40–50%, a loss that keeps the Astros on the wrong side of the bubble.

Milwaukee’s 8-1 win over New York was the most one-sided of the night among contenders. The Brewers are now 82-51 and projected for 99 wins, while the Mets’ 60-73 record leaves them with no playoff path at all.

The Atlanta Braves edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 in the tightest game of the slate. Atlanta improved to 78-55 with a 90–100% playoff probability and 0–10% championship odds; Los Angeles is still the class of the field at 80-53 and 90–100% to reach October, with 10–20% championship odds.

The Arizona Diamondbacks blanked the Chicago Cubs 2-0, a result that checked a 76-58 Chicago team still carrying 90–100% playoff odds. Arizona is 71-63 and pushing in the background, while the Cubs remain one of the safest bets in the bracket.

The San Diego Padres shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0. San Diego moved to 72-62 and 60–70% to make the playoffs, while Pittsburgh is 65-70 and barely alive at 0–10%.

The last game of the night turned into the wildest finish, with the Cincinnati Reds outlasting the San Francisco Giants 10-9. Neither club has a playoff path left — Cincinnati is 63-71 and San Francisco is 54-79 — but the total showed how thin the margins can be even in a lost season.

What the standings say now

The top of the board is crowded with certainty. Los Angeles (80-53), Milwaukee (82-51), Atlanta (78-55), Chicago (76-58), Tampa Bay (79-54), and New York (75-57) all sit at 90–100% or better to make the postseason.

The real fight is lower down. San Diego’s 60–70% sits well ahead of Houston’s 40–50%, and both clubs still have meaningful work left with the season at 80–90% complete.

What’s Next

The next stretch is about separation, not rescue. San Diego and Houston are the most important teams to watch in the middle tier, while Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, the Mets, and the Giants are playing out seasons with little or no postseason leverage left.
