The bubble is where seasons get honest. In the stretch run, teams either separate with wins or spend September begging the math to cooperate, and the latest MLB playoff odds table already shows which clubs are building a cushion and which ones are one bad week from collapse.
MLB: the race has a clear top, but the middle is crowded
Milwaukee Brewers are already effectively through at 81-49, with a playoff chance and 99 projected wins. The real story is the line behind them: San Diego Padres sit at 70-60 and , while Houston Astros are only despite a 65-65 record.
The useful middle tier is tight. Boston Red Sox are 70-59 with a chance, Philadelphia Phillies are 72-58 at , and Chicago White Sox are 67-62 at after hanging around longer than the record suggests.
Arizona Diamondbacks are the warning sign at 68-62 and . They still project to 84 wins, but that gap between record and odds says the market sees a lot of work left, not a safe lane.
- PHI: 72-58, — one more push and they can stop looking over their shoulder.
- CWS: 67-62, — the odds are good, but not comfortable.
- SD: 70-60, — strong record, but not enough separation.
- HOU: 65-65, — the most fragile contender in the middle.
- AZ: 68-62, — still alive, but the margin is thin.
Most Precarious Position
Houston is the team living most dangerously. At 65-65 with a playoff chance, the Astros are the clearest example of a club that has not turned a .500 record into security; they are still barely favored, and that is not the profile of a team in control in late August.
