With 126 of 162 games in the books, the MLB playoff odds board is finally separating into contenders, locks, and long shots. The biggest swing from Tuesday came in Boston, where the Boston Red Sox beat Arizona 9-4 to hold at 95.4% for the postseason, while the Arizona Diamondbacks slid deeper into the crowded middle at 66-61.

Boston keeps pace; San Diego keeps pressure on

Boston’s win over ARI was the loudest offensive result of the day and kept the Red Sox within striking distance of the league’s top tier at 88 projected wins. Arizona’s four runs were not enough to change the shape of a race that has become a battle to survive the middle.

The other result with real top-half weight was San Diego Padres 5, New York Mets 2. SD is now 63.4% to reach the playoffs with an 86-win projection, while NYM sits at 0.0%, and the Padres’ margin over the field keeps growing even without the record of a true juggernaut.

Toronto, Tampa Bay, and the AL East squeeze

The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-5, but the bigger story is that Tampa Bay remains near the top at 99.2% playoff odds and a 94-win projection. Toronto is only 25.5%, which means a big night like this still has to be followed by a run, not just a result.

The Rays’ cushion is large enough that one loss does not move much, but the Blue Jays needed a statement and got one. At 62-65, Toronto is still fighting to turn a late push into something the simulations can believe.

St. Louis blanks Cincinnati as the wild-card chase stays thin

The St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Cincinnati Reds 3-0, a clean result that matters more because of where both teams sit. STL is 22.6% to qualify with an 83-win projection; CIN is down to 0.1% and 60-66, so the margin is nearly gone.

That shutout also fit the late-season profile: when your playoff path is this narrow, runs allowed matter as much as runs scored. St. Louis still needs help, but Cincinnati’s window is basically closed.

Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Detroit all fight uphill

The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1, a useful road win for a team at 1.4% playoff odds. Detroit, at 28.6% and 61-65, has the better mathematical position, but the Tigers could not afford to give away a game to a club with almost no margin.

Cleveland Guardians over San Francisco Giants 8-1 was the day’s most one-sided scoreline. Cleveland is still only at 24.1%, but a win like that helps stabilize an inconsistent profile, while San Francisco has already fallen to 0.0% at 51-74.

Minneapolis adds another crack to the middle

The Minnesota Twins beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1, yet the playoff math barely budged at the top. Atlanta is still 99.2% to make it and remains one of the league’s safest bets, while Minnesota sits at 25.4% and needs a long run to justify its 79-win projection.

For the Twins, that means every win matters, but the standings show how much work remains. At 62-65, they are still chasing a group that includes TOR, CLE, and DET.

New York and Baltimore stay in the fight, but not together

The New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1, and the odds reflect the gap: NYY is 97.6% with a 91-win projection, while BAL is only 11.0% and 61-65. The Yankees are effectively in control; Baltimore is still trying to stay attached.

That’s the shape of the stretch run now. The contenders are mostly set, and the rest of the schedule is about sorting out who can still climb into the field.

What’s Next

The games that matter most now are the ones involving SD, STL, TOR, CLE, DET, and BAL, because those clubs sit in the thick of the wild-card math. Boston and Tampa Bay can keep building separation, but the real volatility is in the 20%-to-30% band where one hot week can still change everything.
