Detroit’s 11-0 win over Seattle was the biggest needle-mover on Thursday’s MLB playoff odds board. The Tigers are still just 56-59, but their playoff chance jumped to 37.5% and their projected wins sit at 81; the Mariners fell to 29.3% with 80 projected wins after getting blanked.

Thursday’s biggest swings

Detroit Tigers turned a tight wild-card chase into a rout, and Seattle paid for it. The shutout matters because both clubs are clustered near the cut line: Detroit at 37.5% and Seattle at 29.3%, with only a one-win edge in projected totals separating them.

Milwaukee Brewers kept their perfect position at 72-43 and 100.0% playoff odds with a 5-2 win over Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh is still hanging around at 7.1%, but at 57-60 the margin for error is gone; Milwaukee’s 99 projected wins remain the league’s clearest marker of control.

The crowded middle stays crowded

Chicago Cubs beat Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 in the closest game of the night. Chicago is now 67-49 with a 96.3% playoff chance, while Toronto sits at 54-62 and only 3.3%, a gap that makes every one-run loss feel like a season tax.

Atlanta Braves rolled past Miami Marlins 11-3, and the math stayed clean: Atlanta is 70-45 with a 97.9% playoff probability, while Miami remains stuck at 21.3% despite an 81-win projection. Atlanta’s 13.1% championship odds still trail Milwaukee, but they are the best number in the NL after the Brewers.

New York Mets thumped Cleveland Guardians 13-6, a score that looked more decisive than the standings. Cleveland is 57-59 and still at 32.3% playoff odds, while New York sits at 50-66 and remains at 0.0%; the blast of offense changes the box score, not the race.

Late-game margins, no room to breathe

Cincinnati Reds edged Oakland Athletics 6-5, a win that nudged Cincinnati to 3.0% playoff odds and left Oakland at 0.0%. At 56-58, Cincinnati is still alive, but the record says it has to win at a much better clip than this.

Los Angeles Angels took care of Baltimore Orioles 4-1. Baltimore’s 18.5% chance is still in play at 56-59, but the Orioles need more than decent pitching nights; the Angels remain finished at 0.0% despite the win.

Minnesota Twins squeezed past Kansas City Royals 4-3 and stayed in the mix at 23.6%. Minnesota is 57-59 and chasing a board that still has room, while Kansas City is 48-68 and done at 0.0%.

What’s next

The sharpest watch points are Detroit, Seattle, Baltimore, Minnesota, and Cleveland, all of whom remain within reach of meaningful odds but have little margin left. Chicago and Atlanta keep trying to turn playoff locks into better seed lines, while Milwaukee is playing for October position more than survival.

For the eliminated clubs, the focus shifts to spoiler work and evaluation. The numbers say Toronto, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Miami still have something to play for in the standings, but not much in the postseason column.
