Carolina Hurricanes sit ahead of a crowded early NHL playoff race

Through just 8 of 84 games, the NHL playoff odds board is still more projection than verdict, but the first real separation is on top: the Carolina Hurricanes are 6-2 and sit in the 90–100% playoff band with 109 projected points. That is not a clinch, but it is the clearest early edge in a season where every contender still has plenty of runway.

Eastern Conference race

Carolina leads the East in both record and projection, and the teams chasing it have already created a clear second tier. The Boston Bruins are 6-2 with a 70–80% playoff band and 102 projected points, while the Tampa Bay Lightning are 5-2, also in the 70–80% range and projected for 102 points. That puts both clubs in good position, but still behind Carolina’s early pace.

The better tension is in the next layer. The New York Rangers sit at 6-3 with a 60–70% playoff band and 99 projected points, and the Ottawa Senators are 6-2 with the same 60–70% range and 99 projected points. Both teams have started well, but the market still treats them as less secure than the East’s upper group.

There are no Eastern clinchers or eliminations this early, and that is exactly the point. With so much season left, the meaningful takeaway is not who is safe, but who has bought themselves room. Carolina has done that; New York and Ottawa have not.

Western Conference race

The West is tighter at the top, with the Vegas Golden Knights leading the way at 7-2, 107 projected points, and a 90–100% playoff band. The Colorado Avalanche are 5-3 with a 80–90% band and 106 projected points, followed by the Edmonton Oilers at 5-2 and 80–90% with 104 projected points. Vegas has the best record; Colorado and Edmonton remain close enough to matter.

Behind that front line, the bubble is already taking shape. The Utah Mammoth are 6-2 with a 70–80% band and 103 projected points, the Minnesota Wild are 5-3 with a 70–80% band and 101 projected points, and the Seattle Kraken are 5-3 with a 60–70% band and 96 projected points. The gap in projected points is small enough to change quickly, but the playoff bands already separate the safer teams from the ones still fighting to prove they belong.

One club has already dug a deep hole: the Dallas Stars are 3-4, projected for 97 points, and sit in the 60–70% band despite the losing record. That is not elimination, but it is a weak opening for a team expected to be in the mix.

Games that will shape the next week

  • Vegas Golden Knights vs. Colorado Avalanche — a top-of-the-West meeting between 90–100% and 80–90% playoff teams.
  • New York Rangers vs. Ottawa Senators — two East bubble teams at 60–70% trying to keep pace with the tier above them.
  • Seattle Kraken vs. Dallas Stars — a useful early read on whether either 60–70% Western team can separate from the pack.
