Thursday’s biggest swing came in Houston, where the Los Angeles Angels blasted the Houston Astros 18-3 and exposed just how thin Houston’s margin has become. The Angels are already at 0.0% playoff odds, but the loss leaves Houston at 59.3% with an 81-win projection after one of the day’s ugliest blowouts.

MLB playoff odds and recap

This is the MLB playoff odds stretch run, with 128 of 162 games played and every result carrying real weight. The clubs at the top are secure; the fight now is mostly about seeding, survival, and who can stop slipping.

Houston gets crushed, while Milwaukee stays in control

Milwaukee (79-49, 100.0%) handled Seattle 7-4, improving its projected total to 98 wins and keeping the best championship number on the board at 17.1%. Seattle (60-68, 20.7%) took another hit and sits on the edge of the race with a 78-win projection.

The Seattle Mariners needed a clean series result and got the opposite. The loss leaves them behind Houston, Texas, Toronto, Cleveland, and St. Louis in the crowded middle, with no room left for another flat night.

Toronto, Texas, and Cleveland all stayed alive

Toronto (63-66, 27.6%) beat Tampa Bay 5-1, a useful road win even if the Rays remain almost fully secure at 99.0% and 94 projected wins. Toronto’s path is still narrow, but this was the kind of result that keeps the math from closing too fast.

Texas (63-65, 36.2%) took care of Washington 2-0 behind a shutout, and the Rangers now project to 80 wins. Washington (61-68, 0.5%) is effectively out, but Texas remains very much in the hunt.

Cleveland (62-66, 23.7%) beat San Francisco 5-2 to stay in the mix, while San Francisco (52-75, 0.0%) dropped another game with no realistic path left. The Guardians’ 79-win projection is still short of comfort, but the win keeps them within striking distance.

St. Louis wins a one-run shootout, Kansas City is done

St. Louis (66-63, 21.6%) outlasted Cincinnati 10-9 in the tightest game of the day, and the Cardinals’ projected finish remains 83 wins. Cincinnati (61-67, 0.1%) is effectively finished despite the close score, while St. Louis keeps a pulse in a race that has been unforgiving.

Kansas City’s 6-2 win over Oakland offered a clean result, but the standings say little changes for the Royals. Kansas City is still at 0.0% playoff odds, while Oakland is also at 0.0%, so this was more about a finished season than a race.

Atlanta keeps pace, and the White Sox stay buried

Atlanta (75-53, 99.4%) beat Chicago 2-0 and continued to look like one of the most stable teams in the league. The Braves sit at 94 projected wins and 9.0% championship odds, while Chicago remains outside the playoff picture with no odds listed.

The shutout mattered because Atlanta does not need style points; it needs to keep banking wins and protecting a near-lock position. Chicago has no comparable cushion, and the gap is only getting wider.

What’s next

The most important follow-up games belong to Houston, Texas, Toronto, Cleveland, St. Louis, and Seattle. Houston’s 59.3% is still playable, but another loss would drag the Astros closer to the middle-tier pack, while Texas (36.2%), Toronto (27.6%), Cleveland (23.7%), St. Louis (21.6%), and Seattle (20.7%) are all fighting to stay above water.

Milwaukee and Atlanta are playing for positioning now, not survival. Their next results will shape how dangerous the bracket looks in October, but for the bubble teams, every game from here is a referendum on staying alive.
