The Florida Panthers are hanging around, not separating. At 2-2 with a 59.7% playoff probability and a projected 97 points, Florida sits in the NHL’s early-season middle class: good enough to be a live postseason bet, not good enough to feel safe after four games.
Florida Panthers in the early East race
This is the first month, and the standings are still mostly projections wearing real jerseys. Florida’s spot in the NHL playoff odds picture is more fragile than it looks because the gap between the Panthers and the teams around them is tiny.
Florida’s 97-point projection lands exactly with the New York Rangers and the Winnipeg Jets, both at 97 projected points and in the 60–70% playoff band, and just behind the Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars, each projected at 98 points and also in the 60–70% range. That is the territory Florida has to chase if it wants a safer cushion later.
The Panthers are also separated from the pack behind them by only a little. The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the 50–60% band with 96 projected points, the Washington Capitals are at 95 projected points, and the Boston Bruins are at 95 as well, both also in the 50–60% band. Florida is not adrift, but it is not building a real buffer yet either.
What 59.7% means for Florida
A 59.7% playoff probability is the definition of a coin-flip team with a slight edge. More often than not, the Panthers finish in the bracket; often enough, they do not. That is not the profile of a contender coasting toward April.
The 17.1% division win probability tells the same story. Florida can absolutely win the division, but the model says that outcome is a minority case, not the expectation. The better path is simpler: stack enough regular-season points to stay ahead of the teams clustered around 94 to 96 projected points.
At this stage, the Panthers do not need a hot streak to survive, but they do need to avoid becoming the kind of 97-point team that spends the whole season chasing the last line instead of controlling it. Early losses matter because the field behind them is crowded and close.
Florida Panthers will likely make the playoffs
The evidence points to Florida making it more often than not. A 2-2 start, a 97-point projection, and a playoff probability just under 60% all suggest the Panthers are still positioned on the right side of the race, even if the margin is not comfortable yet.
The verdict is straightforward: Florida should make the playoffs, but not as a lock. If the Panthers settle into the 97- to 98-point range and keep the teams at 95 or 96 at arm’s length, they get in. If they drift closer to the crowded 50–60% tier, the season turns into a real fight.
