With 117 of 162 games played, the MLB playoff odds board has separated into two groups: the clubs that can still afford a bad week, and the ones that cannot. Milwaukee (73-44) and Tampa Bay (70-46) are controlling the top of the table, while the wild card line in both leagues is starting to squeeze the middle.
American League: Boston and Chicago keep the cushion, but Houston and Texas are still alive
Tampa Bay (70-46, 100.0%) and Milwaukee (73-44, 100.0%) are in as close to a mathematical lock as this season offers, and both project as legitimate October front-runners. Milwaukee’s 99 projected wins and 18.6% championship odds are the best title profile on the board, with Tampa Bay right behind at 95 projected wins and a 9.8% championship shot.
Boston (64-52, 96.6%) and the Yankees (66-51, 98.1%) sit in strong position, but the AL wild card picture is still not settled. Chicago (60-56, 64.4%) and Houston (60-58, 62.6%) are hanging on inside the race, while Texas (59-58, 47.3%) is right on the edge and still within range if it strings together a run.
The gap between the contenders and the chase group is real, not cosmetic. Boston is projected for 89 wins, New York for 92, and Chicago for 91, which gives those clubs a much cleaner path than Houston (83 projected wins) or Texas (82 projected wins), even before you account for the razor-thin margin for error in the final month.
Wild card watch: Boston and New York are playing from strength, but the last two AL spots are where the pressure sits. Houston and Texas need to outplay their projections; Chicago has the better buffer, and Boston’s 7.3% championship number is the strongest non-division title profile among the American League middle tier.
National League: Dodgers and Braves are secure, but the third tier is still unstable
In the National League, Los Angeles (70-47, 100.0%) and Atlanta (70-47, 98.3%) are operating from near-certainty, with the Dodgers’ 16.8% championship odds giving them the clearest NL title edge outside Milwaukee. The Dodgers are projected for 96 wins, while Atlanta is at 95, and both have already built the kind of margin that lets them focus on seeding rather than survival.
The real race is behind them. Chicago (68-50, 96.8%) and Philadelphia (62-56, 54.3%) are the two most relevant wild card markers, while Arizona (62-56, 52.0%) remains in the fight and can still force its way into October if the offense holds up. Philadelphia and Arizona are separated by nothing in the standings, but the playoff odds show how fragile the position is.
Arizona and Philadelphia both project at 84 wins, which explains why neither has much breathing room. The difference is that Chicago’s 91 projected wins put it on a sturdier track, while the Phillies and Diamondbacks are trying to win a race that still looks like it could swing on a single bad series.
Elimination watch: The NL middle is starting to narrow. Arizona (52.0%) and Philadelphia (54.3%) cannot assume anything, and teams such as San Diego and the rest of the pack would need a major late push to create a true upset path against the current top six.
Weekend Series to Watch
- Houston vs. Texas: A direct fight between two clubs with postseason odds under 65%, and a chance for one to separate from the 82-win projection tier.
- Philadelphia vs. Arizona: Two teams with identical 84-win projections and almost no daylight between them in the wild card chase.
- Boston vs. New York: Not an elimination game, but it still shapes AL seeding, and both teams remain well above 96% to reach October.
