The bubble is the best place in sports because it turns every series, every homestand, and every injury into leverage. On July 19, the only live bubble race in the data is MLB, with MLB playoff odds sorting contenders from the teams still hanging on.

MLB: one real bubble, a clear top tier, and a few teams still in striking distance

Los Angeles Dodgers are miles clear at 62-36 with a 90–100% playoff chance and a 20–30% title share. The real tension starts behind them, where the field gets thin fast.

Milwaukee Brewers sit at 61-37 with a 90–100% playoff odds mark, while New York Yankees are at 54-43 and 90–100%. Both are in good shape, but neither has room to coast with the standings still shifting over the final two months.

The cleaner bubble cases are Chicago Cubs at 55-43 and 70–80%, Cleveland Guardians at 52-47 and 60–70%, and Philadelphia Phillies at 55-44 and 60–70%. Those are playoff teams in the making, but not teams that can absorb a long skid.

Chicago White Sox are the sharpest true bubble read at 51-46 and 60–70%. Texas Rangers (50-48, 50–60%) and Boston Red Sox (49-48, 50–60%) are still alive, but both need a run of series wins rather than a .500 finish.

Seattle Mariners are the line of demarcation at 49-50 and 50–60%. They are one of the few teams right on the edge: good enough to stay in the conversation, not good enough to feel safe.

NHL: preseason only, so the odds are still theory

There is no live NHL bubble race here because the season is listed as preseason, with 82 of 82 games already reflected in the context and no playoff-odds board provided. In preseason, the cleanest read is not who is “in,” but which teams project as the strongest baseline once the games begin.

Colorado Avalanche finished 55-27, Carolina Hurricanes were 53-29, and Dallas Stars were 50-32. Those records would normally anchor a playoff field, but without live odds attached, they belong in the preview tier rather than the bubble tier.

NBA: no current odds board, no bubble math yet

The NBA section is empty, so there is no usable playoff-odds data for a bubble call. That leaves no basis to separate 20–30% teams from 70–80% teams, which is the whole point of the exercise.

If you are tracking the race through simulations, the model logic is simple: odds move with wins, losses, and remaining schedule strength, not reputation. That is the entire point of how it works.

Most precarious position: Seattle Mariners

Seattle is the team living most dangerously right now. At 49-50 with a 50–60% playoff chance, the Mariners are the only club in the MLB bubble band that is effectively balanced on the edge, while teams around them either have more cushion or a cleaner path.
