The biggest swing from Friday came in New York, where the New York Yankees (58-45, 90–100%) beat the Philadelphia Phillies (56-48, 60–70%) 1-0. In a stretch run where every game nudges the board, that kind of shutout win reinforces New York’s grip near the top while Philadelphia keeps slipping into a tighter National League race.

Friday’s scoreboard

The Tampa Bay Rays (60-43, 90–100%) hammered the Cleveland Guardians (54-51, 60–70%) 11-3, the loudest offensive result on the board. Tampa Bay remains one of the safest postseason bets in the field, while Cleveland’s margin is thinner after another loss against a team already projected for 91 wins.

The Chicago Cubs (58-45, 70–80%) edged the Pittsburgh Pirates (53-51, 30–40%) 3-2, a clean example of a contender handling a bubble team without much margin for error. Chicago stays in strong playoff position; Pittsburgh keeps living on the edge with less than a one-in-three path to October.

The Arizona Diamondbacks (55-49, 20–30%) beat the Washington Nationals (52-52, 20–30%) 3-2, a coin-flip game between two teams with nearly identical postseason odds. Arizona’s win barely moved the needle in the standings, but it keeps Washington from gaining a foothold in the race.

The Houston Astros (51-54, 30–40%) topped the Chicago White Sox (54-48) 9-5, a needed result for a Houston team still trying to climb back into serious contention. Chicago’s record stays better on paper, but Houston’s 30–40% playoff shot is still live if this run continues.

The Detroit Tigers (50-54, 20–30%) beat the Kansas City Royals (43-62, 0–10%) 2-1, a small but useful win for a club still within striking distance of the bracket. Kansas City’s season profile is unchanged by the standings: 0–10% to make the playoffs.

The San Diego Padres (51-53, 10–20%) beat the Miami Marlins (52-52, 20–30%) 4-2, moving San Diego a step closer in a crowded chase. Miami’s .500 record keeps it around the fringe, but the 20–30% projection says the margin remains thin.

The Athletics (44-59, 0–10%) blanked the Minnesota Twins (51-54, 20–30%) 2-0, the most surprising result of the night. That shutout is a real stunner because it came against a team with a much clearer path to October, and it leaves Minnesota with work to do despite still sitting at 20–30%.

What the numbers say

The top of the board did what the top of the board should do: New York and Tampa Bay handled business and stayed in the 90–100% range. The Cubs protected a playoff lane at 70–80%, while Cleveland’s 60–70% keeps it in the race but not comfortably.

Below that, the picture is muddier. Pittsburgh (30–40%), Houston (30–40%), and Detroit (20–30%) are still alive, but none can afford many more losses like Friday’s close calls.

What’s next

The most important follow-up games belong to the teams still trading blows in the middle tier: Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Houston, Detroit, Minnesota, Miami, San Diego, Arizona, and Washington. Every one of them is fighting for position against opponents already carrying the better odds, which makes the next few series feel less like a sprint and more like a final test.
