At 66% of the way through the season, the MLB playoff odds board is starting to separate the real contenders from the traffic jam. The top two have essentially locked in October: Los Angeles Dodgers (67-40, 100.0%) and Milwaukee Brewers (67-40, 100.0%) are both projected for 100 and 99 wins, and the race behind them is now about positioning, not survival.
American League: New York, Tampa Bay and Atlanta set the pace
The AL’s top tier is clear. The New York Yankees (61-46, 97.2%) and Tampa Bay Rays (62-44, 96.9%) are almost in, and the Chicago White Sox (55-51, 61.1%) have turned a mediocre record into a real playoff case.
Atlanta Braves (62-44, 96.8%) sit just behind that group in the overall board, but the more important story is the clustering in the middle. Boston Red Sox (55-51, 69.8%), Texas Rangers (55-52, 59.2%) and Cleveland Guardians (55-54, 50.8%) are all hovering around the cut line, with Seattle still needing a run.
The Seattle Mariners (53-55, 41.3%) are the clearest long-shot of the pack, but 41.3% is not dead yet in a race this compressed. The AL wild card picture is straightforward: New York and Tampa Bay look safest, Boston/Texas/Cleveland are fighting to hold ground, and Seattle needs a surge to get back into the three-spot mix.
National League: Chicago is the real threat to the top two
The NL has a different shape. The Dodgers and Brewers are running away with the league, but the Chicago Cubs (61-46, 90.9%) are the club most likely to challenge the established order, while the Philadelphia Phillies (57-51, 54.4%) are stuck in the middle of the board.
The Phillies’ 54.4% chance says they are in the race, but not safely in control of it. More importantly, their 57-51 record leaves little margin if the pack behind them keeps climbing, and no NL team outside Chicago has separated from the mess in the same way Boston or Texas have in the AL.
That makes the wild card line the key number in the NL. Chicago (61-46, 90.9%) is close to a lock, Philadelphia is vulnerable, and every series in the next week can reshape which clubs are still playing for October and which are already chasing a shrinking percentage.
Weekend Series to Watch
- BOS and TEX: two teams sitting near the AL cut line, both with 55-win resumes and playoff odds in the 60% range or lower.
- CLE and SEA: the Guardians (55-54, 50.8%) and Mariners (53-55, 41.3%) are the clearest barometer for whether the AL race stays crowded.
- PHI and CHC: Philadelphia (57-51, 54.4%) is trying to keep pace while Chicago (61-46, 90.9%) looks to keep tightening its grip on a postseason spot.
