The biggest swing from Wednesday came in Boston’s 6-3 win over Baltimore, a result that nudged the MLB playoff odds race deeper into separation mode. In late July, with 102 of 162 games played, these are the kinds of wins that harden the bracket: Boston is 52-49 and sitting at 67.6%, while Baltimore falls to 50-53 and 21.1%.

Boston and New York keep the pressure on

The Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-3, and the gap in the probabilities tells the story. Boston’s 67.6% playoff chance reflects a club still in the hunt at 52-49; Baltimore’s 21.1% leaves the Orioles needing a real run at 50-53.

The New York Yankees were cleaner, blanking the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 behind a shutout. New York is 57-45 and carries a 96.5% playoff probability, while Pittsburgh’s 53-50 record still translates to only 37.6% despite the solid win total.

Detroit’s upset and Minnesota’s push

The day’s most surprising result was Detroit Tigers 5, Chicago Cubs 1. Detroit is only 48-54, but the 22.6% playoff odds show it is not dead yet; Chicago drops to 57-45 and 74.7%, still safe but no longer insulated.

Minnesota Twins did the same kind of damage to a direct competitor, beating the Cleveland Guardians 10-6. Minnesota sits at 50-53 with 20.9% playoff odds, while Cleveland is 54-49 and 71.1%; the margin is still in Cleveland’s favor, but this was the sort of head-to-head loss that trims the margin for error.

High-scoring swings and tight finishes elsewhere

The night also featured a blowout in the desert, where the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Athletics 15-5. Arizona’s 53-49 record keeps it in the mix at 0.3? No — the numbers say the gap is elsewhere: the Diamondbacks are not listed in the playoff-odds table, while the Athletics sit at 43-59 and 0.3%, a season that has effectively run out of runway.

The Kansas City Royals edged the San Francisco Giants 5-4, and neither side has much margin left. Kansas City is 43-60 with 0.1% playoff odds, while San Francisco is 42-60 and already at 0.0%.

The Cincinnati Reds beat the Seattle Mariners 5-3, a result that keeps Cincinnati at 0.8% and 47-54 while Seattle falls to 51-52 and 50.9%. That’s a meaningful hit for Seattle, which is now barely above the coin-flip line.

The Chicago White Sox took care of the Texas Rangers 4-2, and the standings pressure is obvious. Chicago is 54-47, but the odds table has Texas at 46.2% and 51-51, compared with Chicago’s team context outside the listed playoff group; for Texas, every loss deepens the squeeze.

What’s next

The next set of games should matter most for Boston’s push to hold the upper hand in the wild-card race, for Seattle’s effort to stay above 50%, and for Cleveland and Minnesota as they keep fighting over the same October line. Pittsburgh and Baltimore are running out of games to turn close odds into real traction, while Detroit’s upset gives it a reason to keep chasing rather than folding the schedule.
